CBS Sports’ Amanda Balionis recently pointed out how much Rory McIlroy’s mindset seems to have shifted following his major wins this season.
Coming into the year, there was a lot of focus on McIlroy, particularly after his narrow U.S. Open loss to Bryson DeChambeau. Many were curious to see how the 35-year-old would bounce back — and he delivered, capturing three tournament wins early in the season, including the Players Championship and the Masters, officially joining the elite group of players to complete the career Grand Slam.
During an interview, Balionis brought up a comment from Trevor Immelman, who said McIlroy looked the happiest and most relaxed he’s ever been. She asked Rory if he agreed. At first, McIlroy was lighthearted, with teammate Shane Lowry joking that if Rory wasn’t happy after all that, he “never will be.”
After taking a moment to think, McIlroy responded thoughtfully:
“Yeah, after the past couple of weeks and what happened at Augusta, I definitely feel that way. Shane actually asked me right after the Masters if I still wanted to play here this week, and I said absolutely. It’s the perfect way to get back into the rhythm, and being here with Shane, defending a title together, is pretty special. We’re having a lot of fun, and that was a great way to cap it off.”
