Donovan Mitchell Called Out by Kendrick Perkins Over J.B. Bickerstaff’s Firing

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ decision to part ways with head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has sparked significant debate within the NBA community. Former NBA player and analyst Kendrick Perkins publicly criticized star guard Donovan Mitchell, suggesting that Mitchell’s influence led to Bickerstaff’s dismissal.

Perkins expressed his views on the matter, stating, “Donovan Mitchell, you got what you wanted, so now all the pressure is on you… this is a [expletive] firing.” This comment reflects a broader sentiment that Mitchell’s dissatisfaction with Bickerstaff’s coaching contributed to the decision.

Reports indicate that Mitchell and Bickerstaff had differing perspectives on team strategies and development. According to NBA reporter Chris Fedor, “Donovan Mitchell and J.B. Bickerstaff didn’t see things the same kind of way.” This disconnect reportedly influenced the Cavaliers’ choice to seek new leadership.

Despite the speculation, Mitchell has denied orchestrating Bickerstaff’s firing. In an interview with The Athletic, he stated, “I wanted the organization to make that (coaching) decision… I trust in [Cavs general manager] Koby [Altman].”

The Cavaliers have since appointed Kenny Atkinson as the new head coach, aiming to align with Mitchell’s vision for the team’s future. As the organization looks ahead, the focus will be on building a cohesive unit capable of contending in the Eastern Conference.
