The PGA have since confirmed that McMahan will not reprise her role on Sunday and has offered the Northern Irishman an apology.

Team Europe delivered another commanding performance on the second day of the Ryder Cup, building a commanding seven-point lead over the Americans.

But the European players had to contend with a vociferous crowd, with police forced to eject spectators throughout the day.

McIlroy had embraced his role as the pantomime villain by blowing kisses towards hecklers, yet the crowd began to irritate him as he turned and shouted: “shut the f*** up,” and declined to putt until they fell silent.

Discussing the spectators at the Ryder Cup, McIlroy remarked: “I don’t mind them having a go at us. Like that’s to be expected. I mean, that’s what an away Ryder Cup is.

“Whenever they are still doing it while you are over the ball and trying to hit your shot, that’s the tough thing.”

New York State police spokesman Beau Duffy confirmed two fans were ejected. The PGA said it added security to the McIlroy and Lowry match and the other three. It also posted reminders about “Spectator Etiquette” which was roundly booed.

Team Europe are on the brink of their first triumph on American turf since 2012. They require just three points from Sunday’s pairs matches, but the hosts refuse to throw in the towel.

Bryson DeChambeau, who alongside Cameron Young secured one of the US’ two points on Saturday, remains convinced Team USA can pull off a miracle.
