Scottie Scheffler drops unexpected announcement before PGA title defence

World number one Scottie Scheffler confirms first-ever 3M Open appearance on PGA Tour.

Scottie Scheffler has made an unexpected scheduling announcement ahead of his PGA Championship title defence, confirming he will play in the 2026 3M Open for the first time in his career.

The tournament will take place from 23–26 July at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota — the week after his title defence at The Open — marking Scheffler’s debut appearance at the state’s only PGA Tour event.

“I’m looking forward to playing the 3M Open for the first time,” said world number one Scheffler.

“I’ve heard great things about the event and I’m excited to get to Minnesota and compete at TPC Twin Cities.”

Scheffler’s commitment is a notable boost for the relatively young tournament, which debuted in 2019 and supports community initiatives across Minnesota through the 3M Open Fund.

“Scottie’s commitment to the 3M Open is a milestone for this tournament and our partnership with the PGA Tour,” said Kady Stoll, vice president of partnerships at 3M.

“His participation reflects the experience we want to deliver for fans, players and the communities we support.”

Scheffler owns 20 PGA Tour titles, including four majors at the 2022 and 2024 Masters, as well as the 2025 PGA Championship and The Open.

He will go in pursuit of joining the career grand slam club at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills from 18-21 June. The final round will perhaps rather fittingly fall on his 30th birthday.

Scheffler has held the world number one position for 155 consecutive weeks, underlining his dominance at the top of the game.

He has finished runner-up in each of his last three PGA Tour starts, most recently falling six shots short of Cameron Young at the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral.

Scheffler landed his landmark 20th PGA Tour title at The American Express at the end of January.

The American has opted to skip this week’s Signature Event, the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow, in keeping with his usual preference to rest ahead of a major. That approach remains unchanged as he prepares to defend his PGA Championship title at Aronimink next week.

Scheffler’s decision to add the 3M Open to his summer schedule offers fans a rare opportunity to see the world’s top-ranked player at a new venue — and signals growing momentum for the Minnesota-based event.
