Rory McIlroy ended his week at the 154th Open Championship by extending an unexpected invitation to Bryson DeChambeau, despite their highly publicized disagreement over the LIV Golf star’s penalty controversy at Royal Birkdale.
Earlier in the tournament, McIlroy was one of the most outspoken critics of DeChambeau after the American received a controversial two-shot penalty for improving the area of his intended swing during the second round. McIlroy said the ruling was justified and criticized the drama surrounding the incident, particularly the delay it caused before third-round tee times were released.
Despite those comments, the Masters champion struck a different tone after the tournament.
Speaking following his tie for 40th, McIlroy said he would welcome DeChambeau’s participation in the Irish Open, which will be held at Trump International Golf Links in September.
“Having someone like Bryson at the Irish Open would be great for the tournament, absolutely,” McIlroy said.
McIlroy also confirmed he plans to take a short break from competitive golf and will not return to the PGA Tour until the middle of next month. The four-time major champion said he wants to spend more time with his wife, Erica, and daughter, Poppy, before focusing on the closing stretch of the season.
The Northern Irishman admitted his priorities have shifted in recent years, explaining that he is playing a reduced schedule to preserve his motivation and concentrate on golf’s biggest events.
While their rivalry grabbed headlines throughout The Open, McIlroy’s latest remarks suggest there remains mutual respect for what DeChambeau brings to the game, particularly when it comes to attracting fans and strengthening major tournaments around the world.
