Scottie Scheffler had plenty of reasons to celebrate after winning the 2026 Tour Championship, but it was one simple decision after his victory that reportedly left his wife Meredith surprised.
The World No. 1 produced a superb final-round 66 at East Lake to finish three shots ahead of Viktor Hovland and secure another FedEx Cup title. After an exhausting week and a remarkable season, Scheffler decided it was finally time to do something he rarely does.
He grabbed a beer.
Speaking after his victory, Scheffler revealed that he had not had a beer in a long time, making his decision to enjoy one after the tournament particularly surprising to those closest to him.
“I had a beer for the first time in a long time,” Scheffler said. “It just sounded good.”
After completing his round and being ushered towards his media commitments, Scheffler realised he had a few minutes to relax. With an open bar nearby, the newly crowned FedEx Cup champion made his choice.
“I was like, all right, I’m grabbing a beer. It tasted great,” Scheffler explained.
The decision reportedly caught both Meredith and his manager Blake Smith off guard.
“I don’t really drink very often,” Scheffler admitted. “My wife and my manager were like, ‘Wow, I haven’t seen you have a beer in a long time.’”
For Scheffler, however, the reasoning was simple.
“Well, season’s over now. I’m going to have a beer. Well-earned beer.”
And it was difficult to argue with that logic.
Scheffler’s victory at East Lake marked his third PGA Tour win of the 2026 season and the 22nd PGA Tour title of his career. The $10 million winner’s prize also pushed his career earnings beyond $130 million and moved him ahead of Tiger Woods on the PGA Tour’s all-time career earnings list.
But despite the records and the enormous prize money, Scheffler’s celebrations remained characteristically simple.
When asked what he planned to eat after his victory, the American immediately turned his attention to another one of his favourites.
“Probably a cheeseburger. I’m a big cheeseburger guy,” Scheffler said. “Cheeseburger, fries, maybe a milkshake.”
The Tour Championship triumph was also made more special by the presence of Meredith and their two young sons, who were waiting for Scheffler behind the 18th green.
Scheffler has frequently spoken about the importance of family, and he admitted that travelling around the world with two young children can sometimes be challenging.
“Times can be tough, but I don’t think Mer and I would trade it for anything,” Scheffler said.
After another historic season, though, Scheffler could finally put the clubs away, enjoy time with his family and, perhaps most surprisingly of all, enjoy a well-earned cold beer.
