Scottie Scheffler has spoken out after Team USA captain Brandt Snedeker made the surprise decision to leave him out of Saturday afternoon’s foursomes session at the 2026 Presidents Cup.
The world No. 1 had just helped Sam Burns secure a 2-and-1 victory over Hideki Matsuyama and Ryo Hisatsune in Saturday morning’s four-ball session when Snedeker decided to split the pairing for the afternoon.
Instead of playing alongside Burns again, Scheffler was given the afternoon off while Burns teamed up with Wyndham Clark.
The decision came as a surprise given Scheffler’s status as the leading player on the American team, but the four-time major champion did not publicly express frustration with the move.
Speaking after the morning victory, Scheffler made it clear that he was ready to support his teammates.
“Our team is a great team, and I’m looking forward to going out and supporting the guys,” Scheffler said. “Yeah, it’ll be fun this afternoon, and yeah, cheer them on, get a little rest.”
The decision followed a difficult stretch for Scheffler in foursomes. He and Burns had lost to Corey Conners and Nick Taylor on Friday, leaving Scheffler with a 1-8-0 record in foursomes across the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup.
Snedeker explained that his decision was not intended as a punishment but as an opportunity to take some pressure off Scheffler before Sunday’s singles.
“I feel like Scottie’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders, carrying Team USA, and it’s time for us to carry him for a session,” Snedeker said. He added that he wanted Scheffler to get some rest and be ready for Sunday.
The timing was particularly notable because Scheffler and Burns had been struggling during their Saturday morning match before turning things around late. Scheffler produced a crucial birdie on the 15th before Burns delivered key shots on the 16th and 17th to secure the win.
Despite that momentum, Snedeker chose to rest Scheffler as the United States attempted to fight back from a deficit against the International team.
Scheffler’s response suggested he was fully prepared to accept the captain’s decision and focus on the bigger picture.
With Sunday’s singles matches now approaching, all eyes will be on Scheffler and whether the additional rest can help him produce a stronger performance when Team USA needs him most.
For Snedeker, the decision was about managing his star player rather than making a statement against him. For Scheffler, the message was simple: support the team, get some rest and prepare for Sunday.
