Jackson Koivun has shown exactly what he is made of after producing a stunning Presidents Cup debut, with the 21-year-old American revealing the mindset behind his remarkable unbeaten run at Medinah.
Koivun entered the competition as one of the least experienced members of Team USA, but he quickly showed that the occasion was not too big for him. The rookie finished with a 2-0-1 record, collecting two wins and a half-point during his first Presidents Cup appearance.
His most impressive moment came in Sunday’s singles match against Si Woo Kim.
The International veteran appeared to have the upper hand after making four birdies and taking a 1-up lead through 11 holes. Koivun, however, responded with a determined back-nine charge, producing three late birdies, including one at the 18th, to complete the comeback and secure another point for the Americans.
Speaking about his experience, Koivun revealed that his rapid rise has even surprised him.
“I had some goals, but for it to come this quickly is definitely shocking, and I’m just thankful and grateful for the trust the captains put in me.”
The young American also explained what he will take from the experience, particularly the opportunity to compete alongside players he had previously looked up to from afar.
“I think I’ll just take a lot of knowledge that I can be out here and I can compete,” Koivun said.
He added that becoming part of the American team had changed the way he viewed his fellow stars.
“It’s just exciting being able to call these guys my friends, and now when I go to tournaments it’s not like, ‘Oh, there’s so and so.’ It’s like, ‘I was on a team with them and we won the Presidents Cup.’”
Koivun’s performance ultimately earned him an A grade in the post-Presidents Cup assessment, with his ability to overcome early nerves and deliver in Sunday’s singles standing out.
For a 21-year-old making his Presidents Cup debut, Koivun could hardly have made a bigger statement. He arrived at Medinah as a rookie and left with an undefeated record, a Presidents Cup victory and the respect of his American teammates.
