Rory McIlroy Skipping PGA Tour Event That Cost Him $3m Due to Rule Violation
Rory McIlroy will be absent from this week’s RBC Heritage tournament in South Carolina as he continues to take in the glory of winning the Masters and achieving a career Grand Slam.
The Northern Irishman’s extraordinary playoff win over Justin Rose at Augusta on Sunday evening was one of the most talked about sporting moments in recent history, as it saw him become just the sixth golfer to win all four Major tournaments. The win at the Masters was a long time coming for McIlroy, as it was the one Major which had always eluded him. It also saw him pocket $4.2 million in prize money.

Round | Score |
Round 1 | 72 |
Round 2 | 66 |
Round 3 | 66 |
Round 4 | 73 |
Total | 277 |
Understandably, McIlroy is now taking a little time off from the golf course due to the maximum effort and energy he had to exert to secure the win at Augusta. He mentioned after his sensational victory at the Masters that he was looking forward to seeing his parents back home in Northern Ireland and planned to spend the next week celebrating with them.
His decision to not play at the RBC Heritage means he is the only player ranked in the world’s top five to not be taking to the golf course in South Carolina.
The RBC Heritage is one of eight signature events on the PGA Tour in 2025, with increased prize money and FedExCup points being up for grabs for the limited field of top players eligible to play in them. The winner at this latest signature event will be rewarded with prize money worth $3.6 million.
Previous Fine For Rory McIlroy
In 2023, McIlroy violated the rules and it came at an expense
Luckily for McIlroy, new procedures state signature events are no longer mandatory for golfers, and they will not face severe penalties for missing the competitions. In 2023, McIlroy was fined $3 million because rules that year stated players cannot miss more than one signature event in the season, and his absence at RBC Heritage was the second of that campaign.
The decision to not play at RBC Heritage two years ago came after failing to make the cut at the Masters a week before. He explained then that he needed the time off after a disappointing outing at Augusta, and he was indeed aware of the consequences.
He said at the time: “I had my reasons to not play Hilton Head. It was an easy decision. I felt that fine was worth that for me in order to get some things in place.”
McIlroy has only played Hilton Head three times in his professional career, participating in 2009, 2020, and 2024. He has struggled on all of his appearances on the South Carolina course, failing to ever break the top 20. Much of his struggles at RBC Heritage come from the course not suiting his powerful swing and instead favouring more accurate approaches.
RBC Heritage is the fourth signature event to take place in 2025, with the next set to take place next month at the Truist Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The next time golf fans can expect to see McIlroy play is next week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans in Louisiana. Here he will defend the title won alongside Ireland’s Shane Lowry at last year’s event.
