Bryson DeChambeau led Team USA’s spirited comeback on Sunday by securing a tie with Matt Fitzpatrick

Bryson DeChambeau was unable to hide his emotion after producing a Ryder Cup comeback for the ages to give Team USA hope in the Sunday singles.

DeChambeau, who has been the leading figure for Team USA at Bethpage Black, New York, this week, faced Matt Fitzpatrick in the singles on Sunday, with USA facing a mountain to climb.

Going into the final session, Viktor Hovland’s injury invoking the envelope rule meant both teams were awarded a half point, while Keegan Bradley sacrificed Harris English, with the scores at 12-5. After a disaster start, DeChambeau found himself five down to Fitzpatrick within the first seven holes, staring down the barrel of a one-sided beatdown.

But the LIV Golf star put in a spirited performance on the back nine, levelling things up on the 17th hole before seeing out the match on 18, earning his team a vital half point.

After every putt made and hole won, DeChambeau was revelling in his role as the team’s talisman, geeing up the crowd at every opportunity.

And speaking immediately after tying his match against the Englishman, DeChambeau couldn’t hide his emotion as he appeared to fight back tears.

“Man, I gave it everything I had today for the team,” he said on the side of the 18th green. “Like my dad always said, you’ve just got to keep swimming. You can’t give up.

“That’s what I did today. I’m very proud of the way I finished after being 5-down. Super emotional for me right now.

“I put my heart and soul into this Ryder Cup, and albeit, it wasn’t the points that I wanted to get for the team, I’m very proud of the way we fought today, and we’re not out of this yet.”

Asked specifically why he felt so emotional, DeChambeau replied: “I love my country.”

DeChambeau has fully embraced his role as the focal point in the USA team, and hasn’t shied away from showing his emotion out on the course.

And speaking after beating Rory McIlroy, the world No.1 praised the leadership shown by DeChambeau in staging his comeback, explaining how he’d given everyone else belief.

“It’s a special group,” Scheffler said. “The fight that these guys showed today, the fight that Bryson showed today and yesterday, I mean, the way he played in our match in the afternoon was amazing, and I don’t think I could have done what I did in my match today if he didn’t do what he was doing in front of me.

“He’s an emotional leader of our team and he’s been great, and I’m proud to be battling with guys like that out here.”
