European players aimed a cheeky dig at Trump after their victory in the Ryder Cup
Donald Trump’s text to the victorious European team after their Ryder Cup win has been revealed by captain Luke Donald.
Europe survived a major scare on the final day as the USA came close to pulling off the greatest comeback in the history of the Ryder Cup.
Trailing by seven points heading into Sunday’s singles, USA rallied and won six matches in front of a fiery crowd at Bethpage Black.
But it was not enough as Europe clinched a narrow victory – England’s Tyrrell Hatton claiming the half-point needed for the visiting team to secure the trophy outright after Shane Lowry had earlier guaranteed at least a draw for the holders.
In the end, Europe went on to secure a 15-13 win, a much narrower margin of victory than many had expected at the start of day three.
There were wild celebrations in the European camp after their victory, with Lowry and others aiming several digs at their US opponents in the hours following the final result.
Rory McIlroy, who had been abused by American fans throughout the competition, was also quick to twist the knife after Europe’s win – at one point covering up singles opponent Bryson Dechambeau’s name with a Europe flag during his celebrations.
McIlroy also recorded a video aimed at US President Trump, who had attended the opening day.
In the clip, McIlroy and other European players chanted the phrase “Are you watching Donald Trump?”
Thankfully, the US President took the video in good spirits, responding on Truth Social: “Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations!”
Donald Trump’s text to Europe
Europe captain Donald has now revealed that the video was a result of Trump sending a text to McIlroy after the USA’s defeat was confirmed.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Donald explained: “We were just in our dressing room after our press conference, just having a moment together with the team, and Rory was there, and he got a text from the President, while we were in there.
“He read it out, and we thought, for a little bit of banter, we’ll send a friendly video of the chant that was going around that Ryder Cup.
“I’m glad he liked it and glad he enjoyed it.”
“That was genuinely a brilliant experience. Witnessing a sitting President at the grounds of a Ryder Cup or at a golf tournament, what an incredible moment,” he said.
“The Air Force One flyover, I’ll never forget that for the rest of my life.”
Europe have now won back-to-back Ryder Cups following their victory in Rome two years ago, and will hope to make it a hat-trick when the tournament returns to European shores at Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027.
