Starting in the 2025 season, the FIA has announced that no points will be awarded for the fastest race lap. This decision follows a review by the World Motor Sport Council. Additionally, Formula 1 teams will now be required to allow at least two rookies to participate in free practice sessions instead of just one.
In a recent race in Singapore, Daniel Ricciardo secured the extra point to block Lando Norris from obtaining it, which could be crucial for Norris in his championship competition with Max Verstappen.
The FIA’s press release stated, “Minor adjustments to the Sporting and Technical regulations for 2024 and 2025 were approved by the World Council, including eliminating the point for the fastest lap and increasing the requirement for fielding a young driver in free practice from once to twice a season.”
Further details on the 2026 regulations have also emerged, including new measures for regulating energy management in Power Units and stricter rules on adjustable aerodynamics to ensure compliance. Additionally, there will be three three-day pre-season tests prior to the 2026 season.
Regarding the cost cap, the regulations have been simplified to clarify what counts towards the limit and to enhance the FIA’s ability to enforce the Financial Regulations. While the cap level remains unchanged, the actual figure will be adjusted to account for changes in exclusions and cumulative inflation.
The FIA plans to submit these changes to the World Council for approval in the coming months to finalize the regulations for the 2026 season.
