The FIA has issued a ruling regarding a penalty for Mercedes after the team violated curfew following George Russell’s crash during the second practice session at the Mexican Grand Prix.
This incident was Russell’s second significant crash in two weeks, having also crashed during qualifying at COTA.
Mercedes initially had high hopes in Mexico City, as Russell’s W15 topped the timesheets in the first practice session, while Lewis Hamilton sat out to allow Kimi Antonelli to drive.
Early in the session, Antonelli had a brief run-in with debris, which sent his car back to the garage before he was cleared to return to the track.
Antonelli’s luck in practice sessions has been poor, having previously crashed during his debut with the team in Monza.
After Russell’s crash in FP2, where he slammed into the barriers and damaged the Tecpro, he was taken to the medical tent but later confirmed to be unharmed.
Although the team had to change the chassis, both the power unit and gearbox remained intact, so no penalties were issued ahead of the race weekend.
Additionally, despite breaking curfew to work on Russell’s car, this was only their second violation of the season, keeping them within the permitted limit.
