The Bay Area’s newest team was revealed Thursday with the Golden State Warriors awarded the WNBA’s newest expansion franchise.

While the team will play at Chase Center, practice at the franchise’s former home in Oakland and be known as the “Golden State”, the name and mascot will not be revealed until later. The league announced that the team will begin play in 2025.

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry has revealed his dream trio to lead the franchise’s new WNBA expansion team.
Speaking at his post-training camp press conference on Thursday, two-time MVP Stephen Curry was asked a series of questions regarding the franchise’s latest exciting news. That included being asked about his dream trio to field a WNBA expansion team, with New York Liberty duo Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu as well as 35-year-old Las Vegas Aces power forward A’ja Wilson .

“A’ja, Stewie and I will probably take Sabrina – those three. That’s a solid trio and we’ll see all three of them this weekend, easy picks,” Curry said.

Stewart and Ionescu will meet Wilson when the Liberty and Aces take the floor for the WNBA Finals starting on Sunday. Las Vegas will look to win its second straight WNBA title after defeating the Connecticut Sun in 2022. Wilson was an “obvious” choice for Curry after being a two-time MVP and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, as well as a five-time All-Star selection. The 27-year-old averaged 22.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 40 games during the regular season.

Stewart is one of the most successful players in WNBA history, winning two MVPs, two Finals MVPs and also being selected to five All-Star games. The 29-year-old averaged 23.0 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists during the regular season.

Ionescu stunned the NBA world when she broke the record for most points in an All-Star weekend three-point contest, with the 25-year-old scoring 37 points to usurp Curry’s previous record is 37. As for Golden State’s new WNBA team, ambitious team owner Joe Lacob expressed his desire for quick success, saying, “We’re going to win championships in our first five years.”
