Wink Martindale has a bone to pick with a recent media narrative.
Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was brought to Ann Arbor this offseason in hopes of continuing the Wolverines’ championship legacy on the defensive side of the ball.
Making the situation more intriguing is that Martindale is considered the ‘OG’ or originator of previous coordinators Jesse Minter and Mike MacDonald’s systems that helped stake the Wolverines to three straight Big Ten titles and a national championship.
On Wednesday, Martindale took aim at media reports on his defensive game calls as the new head man of Coach Sherrone Moore’s defensive hierarchy.
The intel was revealed by Michigan beat writer Alejandro Juniga who said Martindale called reports about his blitz rate as DC “flat out wrong.”
According to Martindale, the media narrative on his defensive play calls is being created by people who don’t know the nuances of the sport.
“The people keeping count of your pressures don’t know what the difference between a pressure, a simulated or a four-man rush,” Martindale said.
“That’s where I stand on it.”
Michigan ranks 55th in total defense so far this season coming off of their win over previously unbeaten USC and is set to face PJ Fleck’s Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday in a noon home game.
