Scottie Scheffler Shuts Down Reporter’s Question After Masters Charge

Scottie Scheffler produced one of the standout rounds of the 2026 Masters on Saturday, firing a bogey-free 7-under 65 to move back into contention at Augusta National. But his strong play was followed by an awkward press-conference moment when he sharply dismissed a reporter’s opening question.

The exchange began when SiriusXM and CBS Sports HQ reporter Jason Sobel asked Scheffler: “That was a 65 today. What did it feel like it could have or should have been?” Scheffler did not hide his irritation. “That’s just a terrible question. Next question. Awful,” he said.

The moment quickly spread online because it was unusual for Scheffler, who is generally seen as measured and controlled in media settings. His response suggested he viewed the question as undercutting an excellent round rather than recognizing the quality of his play.

Even so, the tension did not appear to last. Reports from the same media session indicated that Scheffler later softened his stance and effectively walked the reaction back, saying, “I already ripped on one question that wasn’t that bad, so I’m not going to rip on another one.” Jason Sobel also indicated afterward that there was no lingering issue between them.

On the course, Scheffler’s performance was the bigger story. Reuters reported that his third-round 65 pulled him back into the tournament after starting the day well off the lead, with the round featuring an eagle and a run of birdies that reestablished him as a serious threat heading into Sunday.

So while social media may frame the incident as Scheffler “calling out” a reporter for “awful comments,” the actual issue was narrower: Scheffler objected to a question about whether his excellent round could have been even lower. That distinction matters. It was less a feud over insulting remarks and more a brief, tense exchange over phrasing in a high-pressure setting at the Masters.
