On Tuesday, it was two years since the seven-time world champion last raced. He seems unlikely to do so in a 2023 season dominated by Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team.
Mercedes started the season with an unusual concept that failed last year but soon changed when they realized they were never going to improve it enough to match the Red Bulls.
Team boss Wolff defended his team for trying to stick to their philosophy. But he says Mercedes has learned from its mistakes and has promised something less flashy for 2024 – although there are some tricks to the silver lining.
I think we were brave and courageous to go on the road with such a car, he told Planet F1. It was a different concept that no one else had before, and it didn’t work. I think it’s that simple. That and physics, not mysticism.
Next year the car will be more traditional in terms of what you would expect from a Formula 1 car, but there are some interesting details that we haven’t seen on other cars yet.
Every year that is not easy is a part of learning that makes you better later. I wish we would have competed for the world title, but it didn’t happen. So we look forward to next year.
