We made it. The PGA Tour’s regular season is complete, with the Wyndham Championship, the 34th event of the season now over. Most of the top names in the sport were not at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., but those who were playing had a lot on the line.
Cam Young, the World No. 3, was the defending champion. He tied for 61st place. But it was another Wake Forest product, Michael Brennan, who took the title, his second on the PGA Tour. With it he collected $1.53 million from the overall $8.5 million purse and he vaulted from No. 105 to 47 in the FedEx Cup standings, meaning he’s onto the first playoff event next week in Memphis.
Beau Hossler was three shots back. He needed to win to qualify for the postseason but the second-place finish had him end the season No. 72 in standings. Meanwhile, with 70 being the magic number, it was Jackson Koivun who entered at No. 70 and will leave at No. 70. The former Auburn standout won the 3M Open two weeks ago in Minnesota and he tied for 29th place at Wyndham to do just enough for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He only needed five events as a pro to make the move, the fewest of anyone in playoff history.
Steven Fisk missed the cut and is No. 71, the first man out. Among others who missed are Matt Wallace (73), Keegan Bradley (74), Jason Day (82) Brooks Koepka (94) and Tony Finau (98).
