Brandt Snedeker has found himself at the center of an unexpected backlash after Team USA’s dramatic Presidents Cup victory, with golf fans questioning his decision on Donald Trump.
The United States entered Sunday three points behind the International team at Medinah, but produced a remarkable turnaround in the singles to win 17-13 and claim an 11th consecutive Presidents Cup.
After the victory, however, it was Snedeker’s comments about Trump that quickly became a talking point.
Trump attended the final day as honorary chairman and spoke briefly to the American team before the singles matches. Snedeker later revealed that Trump had told him he would bring some energy to the team.
“He told me I was going to bring some energy today for you guys. You guys need it,” Snedeker said.
The U.S. captain then made the comment that sparked the strongest reaction.
“And I told him if we did this, he gets all the credit. So thank you, President Trump.”
While Snedeker was clearly acknowledging Trump’s presence and motivational role, some golf fans felt the comment took attention away from the players who had actually produced the comeback on the course.
The reaction was particularly strong because Team USA had overcome a significant deficit through individual performances on Sunday. The Americans won nine of the 12 singles matches, with Jackson Koivun, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Cameron Young, Chris Gotterup and others contributing to the historic turnaround.
One Reddit discussion accused Snedeker of “discrediting” the team’s achievement by directing so much praise toward Trump, while other commenters similarly questioned why the players were not the primary focus of his post-match remarks.
The criticism does not change the fact that Snedeker also praised his players after the victory. He described the Americans as a team that never lost faith and expressed his pride in the way they responded when the situation appeared to be slipping away.
Still, his decision to specifically say Trump “gets all the credit” created a controversy of its own just moments after one of the biggest comebacks in Presidents Cup history.
For many fans, the focus should have remained on the golfers who delivered under pressure.
Instead, Snedeker’s Trump comments have become one of the most discussed moments from the aftermath of Team USA’s victory.
