Winning on the PGA Tour is difficult, as Eric Cole continues to know. For most of the final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge, the 37-year-old journeyman pro was in the lead, looking to finally claim his first tour title after 120th career starts.
But he’ll have to wait a little longer as Russell Henley birdied the 16th, 17th and 18th holes at Colonial Country Club to catch Cole at 12 under for the tournament. Henley then made another birdie on the 18th to close out his sixth career victory in a sudden-death playoff.
“Yeah, I mean it’s very disappointing. Obviously, I felt like I played pretty well today for the most part. It’s a tricky course. I hung pretty tough when I did miss a few shots. It’s disappointing, but I played well and I’m proud of that. … I just needed to shoot one shot better.”
Cole unfortunately remains among the 22 players who have earned more than $10 million but have yet to win on the PGA Tour.
Henley, meanwhile, claimed the first-place prize money payout of $1.782 million from an overall purse of $9.9 million.
