Only two events remained in the PGA Tour’s regular season at the start of the week with the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club holding a lot of weight with the playoffs on the horizon.
It was Michael Thorbjornsen who captured his first PGA Tour victory, moving from 69th to 38th in the FedEx Cup standings and collecting $1.8 million from the overall $10 million purse. The 24-year-old closed with a birdie on the last from 26 feet to shoot an inward-nine 30 and top Xander Schauffele by two shots. After eight years, it’s the final time this tournament will be held.
Last week’s winner of the 3M Open, Jackson Koivun, was back to attempt to add to his haul and improve his standing toward the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but bogeys on two of the last three holes only allowed him to keep his 70th position in the standings, the last spot that would get into the playoffs.
Next week is the Wyndham Championship, the final regular season event of the year.
