Cleveland Cavaliers are facing tough times following their Game 4 loss to the Toronto Raptors.
Following their 93-89 loss in Game 4 on Sunday, the Cavaliers find themselves locked at 2-2 in the first round of the NBA playoffs. While the Cavs were looking to wrap up the series after winning Game 3, their failure to contain the Raptors has seen the series levelled 2-2. For the Cavaliers, talent is not enough for them to win playoff games.
While the Cavaliers had an opportunity to put the Raptors in the corner in the fourth quarter when they led by eight points, Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen did not provide the required performance. The Cavs had enough experience and players with defensive capabilities to clinch the game. However, they failed to do so.
The Cavaliers’ offense did not deliver during the critical moments of the game. Mitchell scored 20 points but had trouble with his shooting, while Harden had seven turnovers despite scoring 19 points. The duo needs to perform well to help the Cavs navigate tough playoff games.
The biggest reason for the Cavaliers’ loss is the lack of physicality in the team. Toronto took advantage of their opponents’ poor rebounding by having more second-chance opportunities. The Raptors created extra chances for themselves while forcing Cleveland to commit turnovers. While the Cavaliers managed to play aggressively in the first half, they looked rushed and could not match the pace set by the Raptors. ([Reuters][1])
In addition to that, Scottie Barnes scored 23 points and played crucial free throws in the dying minutes of the game. Brandon Ingram had a game-high 23 points while adding five rebounds and five assists. In the meantime, RJ Barrett added 18 points while Collin Murray-Boyles scored 15 points and grabbed ten rebounds. After their Game 4 loss, the Cavaliers will have to improve their offensive output while increasing their aggressiveness on defense. While talent is one thing, playing smart is something else altogether. For Kenny Atkinson, it is important to note how he can motivate his players to deliver in difficult situations.
The Cavaliers will return to action in Game 5 against Toronto on Wednesday.
While the Raptors managed to create pressure points against the Cavaliers, the Cavs need to deliver in Game 5. For Atkinson, it is critical to make sure that the Cavaliers avoid making silly mistakes in the upcoming games. If they want to progress further in the playoffs, Cleveland must find a way to play consistently.
