LIV GOLF ISSUES STATEMENT FOLLOWING SERGIO GARCIA EXIT

LIV Golf has made its position clear on the future of the league as Sergio Garcia takes steps toward ending his contract and potentially moving on from the breakaway circuit.

Garcia, one of LIV Golf’s original stars, has asked a bankruptcy court to formally terminate his agreement with the league, creating another major storyline as LIV attempts to restructure ahead of a proposed 2027 return.

The Spaniard’s lawyers argued that the uncertainty surrounding his current contract could make it difficult for him to negotiate with tournament organizers, sponsors and other potential partners.

Garcia’s representatives have asked the court to either end the agreement or allow the golfer to terminate it himself. His legal team also argued that the move would be consistent with LIV Golf’s own position that the existing agreement is not part of the league’s go-forward business plan.

LIV Golf, meanwhile, has maintained that it intends to move forward despite the uncertainty surrounding several of its players.

In its official statement following the Chapter 11 filing, LIV said the restructuring process is designed to preserve the league and create a more sustainable future with new financial investors and greater player involvement.

“This process gives us the structure and time to pursue a landmark transaction and begin the next chapter of LIV Golf,” CEO Scott O’Neil said.

The league has also outlined plans for a new era built around a player-first ownership model, with players expected to have a greater stake in the value created by the league and its teams.

However, Garcia’s decision highlights the uncertainty surrounding the transition.

The 2017 Masters champion has already indicated that he intends to play on the DP World Tour in 2027, making the termination of his LIV contract particularly important as he plans his schedule for next season.

Garcia is not the only LIV player whose future is being closely watched. Several prominent stars have yet to publicly commit to the proposed new structure, while the league continues working to secure the necessary player support and complete its restructuring.

LIV’s official message remains focused on survival and rebuilding rather than abandoning the competition.

The league says it intends to emerge from Chapter 11 and begin its next era in early 2027, subject to court and relevant stakeholder approval.

For Garcia, however, the immediate priority is securing a clear legal separation from his existing contract.

His request has not yet been finalized by the court, meaning the Spaniard’s LIV exit is not officially complete. But his latest legal move has made his intentions increasingly clear as professional golf enters another uncertain period.
