Rickie Fowler Issues Cause of Ongoing Health Crisis

Rickie Fowler has revealed the cause behind the health issue that has affected him for more than two years, with the PGA Tour star confirming he has been battling a chronic sinus infection that will require surgery after the 2026 season.

The six-time PGA Tour winner is expected to undergo the procedure once his playing schedule concludes after medication and antibiotics failed to completely eliminate the infection. Fowler has continued competing throughout the condition, with many fans unaware he had been dealing with the persistent health problem while playing on golf’s biggest stages.

According to ESPN’s Doug Bell, the issue dates back to around the 2023 Ryder Cup. Despite trying conservative treatments over the past two years, the infection has continued to return, ultimately leading doctors to recommend surgery as the best long-term solution.

What causes a chronic sinus infection?

A chronic sinus infection, also known as chronic sinusitis, develops when the tissues lining the sinuses become inflamed for 12 weeks or longer. While many sinus infections begin after a common cold, they can persist for a variety of reasons.

Some of the most common causes include:

  • Repeated viral infections, such as frequent colds, that prevent the sinuses from healing completely.
  • Bacterial infections that continue despite antibiotic treatment or return after temporary improvement.
  • Allergies, including hay fever, which can cause ongoing inflammation and block normal sinus drainage.
  • Nasal polyps, which are non-cancerous growths inside the nose that obstruct airflow and trap mucus.
  • A deviated nasal septum, where the wall between the nostrils is displaced, making proper sinus drainage more difficult.
  • Exposure to irritants, including cigarette smoke, pollution, dust, or chemicals, which can aggravate the nasal passages.
  • Underlying medical conditions, such as asthma or immune system disorders, that make chronic inflammation more likely.

When the sinuses become blocked, mucus can build up, creating an environment where bacteria or fungi may thrive. This can lead to recurring infections and symptoms that become difficult to treat with medication alone.

Symptoms can affect daily life

People suffering from chronic sinus infections often experience nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, headaches, reduced sense of smell, thick nasal discharge, post-nasal drip, bad breath, coughing, fatigue, and difficulty breathing through the nose. For elite athletes like Fowler, these symptoms can make training, travel, and competition significantly more challenging.

Surgery offers the best long-term solution

Because Fowler’s infection has not responded fully to antibiotics and other treatments, surgery has been scheduled after the PGA Tour season. The procedure is designed to open blocked sinus passages, improve drainage, and reduce inflammation, helping prevent future infections.

Medical experts say most patients recover well from sinus surgery and experience fewer infections, improved breathing, and a better quality of life.

For now, Fowler remains focused on finishing the 2026 PGA Tour season before undergoing the operation. Fans across the golf world will be hoping the surgery finally puts an end to the health issue and allows the American star to return to full fitness for the seasons ahead.
