Rory McIlroy has reflected on his latest attempt to make history at East Lake after falling short in his bid to win a record fourth FedExCup title.
McIlroy entered the final round of the 2026 TOUR Championship with momentum on his side after producing a superb seven-under 63 on Saturday to force his way back into contention.
But despite another solid performance on Sunday, the Northern Irishman was unable to catch Scottie Scheffler, who surged to victory and claimed his second TOUR Championship title.
McIlroy closed with a one-under 69 to finish at 11-under par and in a share of fourth place, five shots behind Scheffler.
It was a frustrating conclusion for the three-time FedExCup champion, particularly after the remarkable turnaround he produced earlier in the weekend.
After struggling through the opening two rounds, McIlroy found a spark on Saturday and climbed back into the tournament with one of the best rounds of the week.
Speaking after his third-round 63, McIlroy explained that his improvement came largely from giving himself better opportunities on the greens.
“I feel like I just left myself in better spots on the greens,” McIlroy said. “I gave myself easier putts.”
That resurgence gave McIlroy a realistic chance of mounting another famous East Lake comeback.
Instead, Scheffler produced the performance required to pull clear of the field and finish at 16-under par, with McIlroy ultimately unable to maintain enough pressure during the final round.
For McIlroy, the result nevertheless capped a significant recovery from a difficult start to the FedExCup Playoffs.
Just two weeks earlier, he had finished 66th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and admitted he felt far from where he needed to be with his game. His form improved dramatically at the BMW Championship before his strong finish at East Lake. (
The TOUR Championship defeat will still sting, especially considering McIlroy’s extraordinary history at East Lake.
A fourth FedExCup would have given him another historic milestone, but Scheffler ultimately proved too strong when the tournament reached its decisive stage.
McIlroy may have lost out in Atlanta, but his late surge showed that his game had moved in the right direction after a difficult start to the playoffs.
His challenge for another FedExCup has ended.
But after fighting his way back into contention with that brilliant Saturday 63, McIlroy leaves East Lake knowing he was once again capable of producing his best golf when the pressure was highest.
This time, however, Scottie Scheffler was simply the player who finished the week on top.
