The moment occurred during McIlroy’s round when his tee shot on the 4th hole finished in the fescue beside a female spectator. Before officials or the player could reach the ball, the fan appeared to pick it up, prompting an immediate reaction from those nearby.

Under Rule 9.6 of the Rules of Golf, a player is not penalized if a ball is moved by an outside influence. Instead, the ball must simply be returned to its original location before play continues.

At the 2023 WM Phoenix Open, a spectator caught Jordan Spieth’s golf ball before quickly throwing it back after realizing the mistake. In 2022, a fan picked up Nelly Korda’s ball during the Amundi Evian Championship and was instructed by officials to replace it immediately.
Similar incidents have also involved Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau, whose balls were mistakenly picked up by spectators during PGA Tour events.
Some fans responded to the latest controversy with humor.
“I’m at a golf tournament and a ball just landed next to me. I know, I’ll pick it up,” one user joked sarcastically, while another compared the spectator to a bird interfering with play.
