Scottie Scheffler has finally weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau, making it clear where he stands following the drama at the 2026 Open Championship.
After DeChambeau’s controversial two-shot penalty at Royal Birkdale sparked fierce reactions across the golf world, McIlroy publicly criticized the LIV Golf star, saying the penalty was justified and accusing him of making the situation bigger than it needed to be.
Scheffler, however, took a different approach.
The world No. 1 defended DeChambeau’s integrity, insisting that while the two-time U.S. Open champion may have been “a touch careless” around his ball, he did not believe there was any intent to break the rules.
“I’ve known Bryson for a long time,” Scheffler said. “He’s a lot of things, but he’s definitely not a cheater.”
Scheffler acknowledged that the Rules of Golf must be enforced consistently but stressed that television angles and slow-motion replays can sometimes make incidents appear worse than they are.
His comments effectively placed him closer to DeChambeau’s side of the debate, even though he stopped short of criticizing the R&A’s decision to impose the penalty.
While McIlroy maintained that the ruling was deserved, Scheffler urged a more balanced perspective, emphasizing that honest mistakes can happen in golf and should not automatically be viewed as deliberate attempts to gain an advantage.
