Scottie Scheffler has reflected on a dramatic Presidents Cup victory after Team USA completed a remarkable comeback against the International team at Medinah Country Club.
The Americans entered Sunday with their backs against the wall, trailing 10½–7½ and needing a huge performance in the singles matches to retain the trophy.
Scheffler was one of the players Brandt Snedeker turned to early in the final session, sending the world No. 1 out against Nico Echavarria.
The four-time major champion responded with an important victory, helping Team USA move closer to the 15½ points required to win the Presidents Cup.
The American comeback gathered momentum throughout the afternoon as several of Snedeker’s players delivered crucial points. Jackson Koivun, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and the rest of the lineup all played their part as the International team’s three-point advantage disappeared.
Team USA eventually completed the comeback with a 15½–14½ victory, extending its winning streak in the Presidents Cup to 11 consecutive editions.
Scheffler’s contribution was particularly significant given the scrutiny he faced earlier in the week. He had been left out of Saturday afternoon’s foursomes after winning alongside Sam Burns in the morning session.
At the time, Scheffler accepted the captain’s decision and said he was looking forward to supporting his teammates and getting some rest before Sunday’s singles.
“I’ve played a lot of golf this year,” Scheffler said after being given the afternoon off, while also emphasizing the importance of the entire team contributing.
That decision ultimately meant Scheffler arrived at the final day rested and ready to play his part in the American comeback.
The victory also provided a response to questions surrounding Scheffler’s record in team competitions. He had entered the Presidents Cup with a mixed record in Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup play, despite dominating individual PGA Tour competition.
For Scheffler and his teammates, the final result turned a difficult weekend into another Presidents Cup victory.
The Americans had been three points behind heading into the final day, but the singles session produced the turnaround they needed.
While a verified post-victory statement from Scheffler has not yet been widely published, his actions on Sunday delivered the clearest message: he was ready when Team USA needed him.
