Shai Gilgeous-Alexander honest take on Jalen Williams’ importance to Thunder

OKLAHOMA CITY — Jalen Williams is rounding into form at the right moment for Oklahoma City, and after the Thunder’s Game 1 win over the Suns on Sunday, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized just how vital that is to the team’s postseason push. Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault also cautioned that Phoenix is likely to respond with a stronger showing in Game 2.

Williams filled up the box score in Oklahoma City’s 119-84 win, posting 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists, a block, and a steal as the Thunder took a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series. After the game, Gilgeous-Alexander explained why Williams operating at a high level is so important for OKC.

According to Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder are at their best when Williams is playing his best basketball. He added that it is up to him, the coaching staff, and the rest of the team’s ball handlers to keep Williams comfortable and in rhythm.

Gilgeous-Alexander also turned in a strong performance, finishing with 25 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and two blocks in the victory.

As the defending champions begin the first title defense in franchise history, Daigneault also spoke about the value of the week off before the series. While waiting to learn their first-round opponent, the Thunder used the break as a chance to get meaningful work in on the practice floor.

Daigneault said every practice during that stretch mattered in a different way and believed the opening win reflected the team’s preparation. He noted that the extended break was unusual, since teams rarely get that much time off between games, but credited the players for staying locked in.

Oklahoma City will host Phoenix again in Game 2 on Wednesday.
