The world’s best golfers descend on Royal Birkdale for the 154th Open Championship, with Joe Dean securing the final spot after Monday’s dramatic qualifier.
The field is set for the 154th Open Championship, with 156 players heading to Royal Birkdale this week to compete for the famous Claret Jug.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the field as the defending champion after his victory at Royal Portrush 12 months ago. The American will be looking to become the first player to successfully defend The Open since Padraig Harrington achieved the feat at Royal Birkdale in 2008.
Despite being installed as the bookmakers’ favourite at around 7/1, Scheffler arrives on Merseyside after missing the cut at last week’s Genesis Scottish Open – his first missed weekend since August 2022. The four-time major champion will nevertheless be expected to challenge once again on one of golf’s biggest stages.
Rory McIlroy is another player who will fancy his chances after closing with a superb final-round 64 to record a top-10 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open. The six-time major champion will be hoping to win the Claret Jug for a second time, having previously lifted golf’s oldest major at Royal Liverpool in 2014.
Other leading contenders include English duo Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood.
The final place in the championship was secured by Joe Dean, who booked his spot by coming through Monday’s Last-Chance Qualifier at Royal Birkdale.
Sam Burns remains in the field ahead of Thursday’s first round, despite his mother saying last month after the U.S. Open that her son would not be making the trip to England.
A total of 16 LIV Golf players are in the field at The Open.
