Trey Mullinax has spoken out after receiving a six-month suspension from the PGA Tour, taking full responsibility for his anti-doping violation while insisting he never intended to gain an unfair advantage.
The 34-year-old golfer was suspended after testing positive for a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). According to the PGA Tour, Mullinax used medication to treat a medical condition he was originally diagnosed with in college but failed to obtain the required approval under the Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy before taking it.
Following the announcement, Mullinax released a heartfelt statement to fans, accepting responsibility for the mistake.
“To my fans, I want to address the news regarding my failed anti-doping test and the suspension that followed. I take full responsibility for what happened. At the end of the day, it is my responsibility to understand and follow the PGA Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy and all of its rules and regulations. I failed to do that, and that is on me.”
Mullinax explained that he had taken medication to manage a long-standing medical condition but admitted he did not seek prior approval from the PGA Tour before using it.
He stressed that his actions were never intended to improve his performance on the golf course.
“I want to be absolutely clear – I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage. Anyone who knows me knows how much I respect this game and the values it represents.”
The one-time PGA Tour winner also acknowledged that ignorance of the rules was not an excuse and vowed to learn from the experience.
“My lack of knowledge is not an excuse. It was my responsibility to know the rules before taking any medication and I failed to do so.”
Despite the setback, Mullinax remains determined to return stronger when his suspension ends. He thanked fans for their continued support and said he is already looking forward to competing again.
“I accept the consequences of my actions and will use this experience as a lesson. Golf has given me so much, and I never want one mistake to define the respect I have for the game or for the people who support me. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, and I look forward to competing again in 2027.”
The PGA Tour confirmed that Mullinax fully cooperated throughout its investigation. His suspension will run through January 15, 2027, making him eligible to return to competition on January 16, 2027.
Mullinax, whose lone PGA Tour victory came at the 2022 Barbasol Championship, now faces several months away from professional golf before attempting to restart his career next season.
