Brandel Chamblee Takes Savage Dig at LIV Golf With Kentucky Derby Quip After New Investment Announcement

Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee has reignited his long-running feud with LIV Golf, delivering another brutal assessment of the breakaway circuit following news that the league has secured a new lead investor to continue operations beyond the 2026 season.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil confirmed on Wednesday that the league has reached an agreement with an unnamed investor who will help fund the tour’s next chapter, reducing its reliance on Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). While O’Neil expressed confidence that the deal will secure LIV Golf’s future, Chamblee was quick to pour cold water on the announcement.

Taking to X, the former PGA Tour professional mocked the significance of the investment with a cutting analogy that quickly gained attention across the golf world.

“A possible new investor for LIV Golf? Despite having some of the deepest pockets in the world, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund could not make LIV successful,” Chamblee wrote.

He then delivered the remark that has sparked widespread discussion.

“They’re not beating a dead horse. They’re trying to ride one in the Kentucky Derby.”

Chamblee also compared LIV Golf players to actors accepting starring roles in a poorly written movie, suggesting that even elite talent cannot rescue a fundamentally flawed product.

“LIV golfers remind me of actors offered lead roles in a bad movie and think their performance can turn Ishtar into The Godfather.”

Chamblee Defends the PGA Tour’s Position

The outspoken analyst has remained one of LIV Golf’s fiercest critics since the league launched in 2022. While LIV has attracted some of the sport’s biggest names with record-breaking contracts, Chamblee continues to argue that the PGA Tour remains the pinnacle of professional golf.

He pointed to the international strength of the PGA Tour and its competitive environment as key reasons it still stands above every other circuit.

According to Chamblee, nearly half of the world’s top 50 golfers come from outside the United States, highlighting the global appeal and elite standard of the PGA Tour.

He argued that no other tour offers the same combination of world-class competition, historic venues, challenging championship setups, financial rewards and prestige. In his view, the PGA Tour is where the world’s best players are tested most thoroughly and where careers are ultimately defined.

LIV Golf’s Next Chapter Could Look Very Different

Although O’Neil believes the fresh investment marks the beginning of a new era, reports suggest LIV Golf 2.0 may operate under a significantly different business model.

The league is expected to reduce its schedule from 14 events to around 10 tournaments, with roughly half staged internationally and the remainder held in the United States.

Prize purses are also expected to be scaled back considerably, while greater emphasis may be placed on the team format that has been one of LIV’s defining features since its launch.

Several major questions also remain unanswered. LIV Golf is still seeking Official World Golf Ranking recognition, an issue that continues to impact players’ qualification opportunities for golf’s biggest championships. There is also uncertainty over whether the league can retain marquee stars such as Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau as its structure evolves.

Eamon Lynch Also Questions LIV’s Future

Chamblee’s skepticism is shared by Golf Channel contributor and Golfweek columnist Eamon Lynch, who questioned whether any investor would commit significant capital without assurances that LIV’s biggest stars would remain with the league.

Lynch argued that the league’s future ultimately depends on player loyalty—something he believes has historically been difficult to rely upon in professional golf.

“And betting on the loyalty of these players has been a losing bet anytime anyone’s made it in the past,” Lynch said.

A Debate That Shows No Signs of Ending

The latest exchange highlights the ongoing divide within professional golf. While LIV Golf believes fresh investment can help reshape its future, critics remain unconvinced that new funding alone can solve the league’s long-term challenges.

Whether LIV’s new financial backing signals a genuine turning point or simply extends an uncertain experiment remains to be seen. For now, Chamblee’s Kentucky Derby quip has ensured that the conversation surrounding LIV Golf’s future remains as heated as ever.
