Bryson DeChambeau Breaks Silence After Rory McIlroy’s Criticism

Bryson DeChambeau has broken his silence after Rory McIlroy criticized his handling of the controversial two-stroke penalty at The Open Championship, insisting he is determined to move forward despite the setback.

DeChambeau found himself at the center of attention after the R&A ruled that he had inadvertently improved the area of his intended swing on the fifth hole during the second round at Royal Birkdale. The penalty turned his bogey into a triple bogey, dropping him from one shot off the lead to three behind.

The ruling sparked widespread debate throughout the golfing world, with McIlroy among those who believed the R&A had made the correct decision.

Speaking after the incident, McIlroy said he was not prepared to defend DeChambeau’s actions and suggested the LIV Golf star had created unnecessary drama during the championship.

Rather than responding directly to McIlroy’s comments, DeChambeau issued a brief statement on social media, making it clear his attention had shifted back to the tournament.

“Obviously disappointed with the ruling. I don’t agree with it, but it is what it is. This fires me up. Onto the weekend. Let’s get it.”

The message marked DeChambeau’s first public comments since the penalty and came after speculation that he might withdraw from the championship.

Despite his disagreement with the ruling, the two-time U.S. Open champion confirmed he would continue competing and use the controversy as motivation for the remaining rounds.

The R&A has maintained that the penalty was correctly applied under Rule 8.1, explaining that players are not permitted to improve the conditions affecting their stroke, even when the action is accidental.

With emotions still running high, DeChambeau now faces the challenge of putting the controversy behind him as he looks to mount a charge over the weekend, while McIlroy continues his own pursuit of a second Open Championship title.
