Bryson DeChambeau’s social media post has aged badly after the two-time major winner missed the cut at the U.S. Open — a Championship he has won twice
Two-time U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau’s major misery continued as the LIV Golf star missed the cut for weekend action at Shinnecock Hills.
DeChambeau, the 2020 and 2024 U.S. Open Championship winner, has had a miserable time at majors this year. He failed to make the top 60 at Shinnecock and has now missed the weekend at all three majors this year.
However, before his final score was recorded, DeChambeau made a cheeky post on social media that aged terribly. “Like this post if you think I’m going to make my first cut,” DeChambeau said on Instagram, alongside a picture of himself smiling. The latest setback comes after DeChambeau was horrified after missing a putt and bogeying the 17th hole on Friday.
DeChambeau’s frustrations were crystal clear. He declined media duties after his second-round collapse. According to ESPN, the American declined requests to speak with reporters on-site. He did, however, sign autographs for some young fans.
DeChambeau’s choice of club also came under fire during Sky Sports’ broadcast of the major. Commentator Andrew Coltart was left baffled at times.
DeChambeau elected to hit a five iron on the long par-three second, whilst his playing partner, Gary Woodland, hit a two iron, yielding a much better result.
“He has ball speeds of over 190mph with a driver and he’s going in with a two iron,” said Coltart of Woodland. “Yet Bryson is trying to crunch a five iron. You are telling me that Bryson is four clubs longer than the longest man on Tour?
“Bryson has won this two times. The guy is a huge talent but I can’t help thinking he is just trying to muller everything. If it works, it’s fine, but it’s a game of percentages. Three iron for Wyndham Clark.
“That just says the only way for Bryson to get at it with the equipment he’s got is to absolutely go at it, 100 percent, and leave nothing behind.
“I’m not sure you can do that with every club in the bag. Sometimes there has to be a little bit of finesse, there’s got to be taking things off or adding things on.”
America’s Wyndham Clark currently leads the field heading into Saturday’s action ahead of compatriot Samuel Stevens. Meanwhile, back-to-back Masters winner Rory McIlroy struggled.
The Northern Irishman sits tied for 11th. “I just kept hitting it long,” McIlroy told Sky Sports. “It was tough. I feel like our side of the draw played in the windiest of the conditions and the scores sort of bear that out, but I held in and hung in there as best I could.
“Even par going into the weekend isn’t terrible. Hopefully go out there and keep playing the way I’m playing.
“I’m doing the right things. I made a couple of mistakes, which put me behind the eight ball a little bit, but still a really solid two days.
