Rory McIlroy Hit With Masters Penalty for Wearing Green Jacket to Wimbledon? Here’s What Really Happened

Rory McIlroy sparked plenty of attention when he arrived at Wimbledon wearing his iconic Masters Green Jacket, but despite concerns over Augusta National’s strict rules, the golf superstar avoided any penalties.

McIlroy, who successfully defended his Masters title in April to become just the second player after Tiger Woods to win back-to-back Green Jackets in the modern era, made a rare public appearance wearing golf’s most famous piece of clothing.

The Northern Irishman was photographed arriving at the All England Club alongside his wife, Erica, before taking his seat in the Royal Box on Centre Court.

His appearance immediately raised questions because Augusta National has some of the strictest rules in sport regarding the public use of the Green Jacket.

Masters champions are not free to wear the jacket whenever they choose. Instead, they must receive permission from Augusta National before appearing publicly in it.

In addition, the club requires winners to wear the jacket with formal attire, meaning shirts, ties and smart trousers. Casual clothing such as jeans, shorts or T-shirts is not permitted.

Another well-known rule prohibits photographs of a Masters champion wearing the Green Jacket while holding or being pictured with alcoholic drinks.

Although Wimbledon is famous for champagne and Pimm’s, McIlroy carefully avoided being photographed with either beverage during his visit.

As a result, there is no indication that he violated any of Augusta National’s rules or received any disciplinary action.

McIlroy has previously admitted that wearing the jacket in public comes with significant restrictions.

“I’m sort of reluctant to wear it,” he said after winning the Masters in 2025.

“You also have to get permission every time you wear it, so there’s a lot of dos and don’ts around it as well.”

The world No. 1 added that although he once imagined he would wear the Green Jacket frequently after becoming a Masters champion, the reality has been very different because of Augusta’s strict guidelines.

McIlroy is not the first Masters winner to wear the Green Jacket at Wimbledon. Danny Willett famously did so following his 2016 Masters victory, while Sergio Garcia also wore his jacket to the Championships after winning at Augusta in 2017.

Several other golfers, including Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, were also in attendance at Wimbledon this week, but only McIlroy had the privilege of wearing the Green Jacket.

While his appearance generated speculation among golf fans, McIlroy successfully navigated Augusta National’s strict dress code and public appearance rules.

Despite online claims, Rory McIlroy was not hit with a Masters penalty. He reportedly obtained the required permission to wear the Green Jacket and complied with Augusta National’s guidelines throughout his visit to Wimbledon.
