Tiger Woods has been handed a five-year driving ban after reaching a plea agreement in his Florida DUI case.
The 15-time major champion appeared in court on Wednesday morning, where a last-minute agreement between his legal team and prosecutors brought an end to the criminal case stemming from his rollover crash earlier this year.
However, while Woods avoided convictions on the original DUI allegations, the consequences of the plea deal remain significant.
Woods accepts reduced charges
The 50-year-old initially faced misdemeanor charges relating to driving under the influence with property damage and refusing to submit to a lawful test.
Under the plea agreement, those charges were reduced to reckless driving and careless driving.
Woods was fined $1,000 for reckless driving and a further $500 for careless driving, bringing his total financial penalty to $1,500.
Both convictions also carried five-year driving bans, although the bans will run concurrently. That means Woods will lose his driving licence for five years rather than serving two separate bans.
Judge issues Tiger Woods a stern warning
The judge made it clear that Woods must strictly follow the conditions of the driving ban.
According to reports, the golf legend was given a direct warning during the hearing:
“If you drive for any reason at all, you will be going back to jail.”
The warning underlines the seriousness of the punishment facing Woods if he gets behind the wheel at any point during the five-year ban.
Woods appeared in court alongside his attorney, Douglas Duncan, and his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump.
Case follows rollover crash in Florida
The legal case began after Woods was involved in a rollover crash near his Jupiter Island home on March 27.
Reports from the scene stated that Woods failed field sobriety tests and admitted to taking several prescription medications earlier that day.
Responding officers also reportedly found two loose pills that were later identified as hydrocodone, an opioid medication commonly used for pain management.
Woods was arrested and taken to Martin County Jail.

Following the incident, Woods publicly acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and announced that he would be stepping away to focus on his health.
In a statement shared on social media, Woods said:
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.”
Woods later entered a treatment programme in Switzerland, where he reportedly spent almost three months.
His recovery period was briefly interrupted when he returned to the United States to support Vanessa Trump during her health battle before continuing his treatment.
A major consequence for the golf legend
The plea agreement brings the criminal case to a close after months of legal proceedings.
Woods avoided convictions on the original DUI charges, but losing his driving licence for five years represents a significant consequence for the 82-time PGA Tour winner.
The court’s warning also means there will be no room for error.
If Woods drives during the five-year ban, he could find himself back in jail.
