Rory McIlroy has spoken out after a disappointing finish at the 2026 Genesis Scottish Open, admitting he was frustrated with how the tournament ended but insisting he is already focused on bouncing back at The Open Championship.

McIlroy entered the week hoping to build momentum ahead of golf’s oldest major, but an inconsistent performance left him short of contention and sparked plenty of discussion about his form heading into Royal Birkdale.
Reflecting on his week, the four-time major champion acknowledged that he failed to capitalize on several opportunities.
“It’s obviously disappointing because I felt like my game was in a good place coming into the week,” McIlroy said. “I just didn’t execute well enough when it mattered, especially over the weekend.”
Despite the setback, McIlroy remained optimistic about the bigger picture.
“There are still plenty of positives to take away. My ball-striking was solid for long stretches, and I know exactly what I need to work on before The Open.”
The Northern Irishman admitted that small mistakes proved costly on a demanding Renaissance Club layout.
“At this level, one or two poor swings can make all the difference. Unfortunately, I made a few too many mistakes this week.”
While questions have been raised about his recent results, McIlroy dismissed concerns that the Scottish Open performance would affect his confidence.
“I’m not going to overreact to one tournament. Golf is a long season, and I’ve been in this position before. I’ll take the lessons from this week and move forward.”
With The Open Championship now just days away, McIlroy said his attention has already shifted to preparing for the final major of the year.
“The goal now is to recover, get some good practice in, and be ready for Royal Birkdale. That’s where all my focus is.”
McIlroy has enjoyed success on links courses throughout his career and remains one of the favorites heading into The Open despite his disappointing week in Scotland.
The Genesis Scottish Open may not have produced the result he wanted, but McIlroy believes it has provided valuable preparation for the challenge that lies ahead.
“Every competitive round helps. Hopefully I’ll be sharper next week, and that’s what really matters.”
